Over the past 6 years, ELAU has been the only automation supplier to commission the analysts at ARC Advisory Group to study the global packaging market and report the latest trends.

Past reports have covered such disparate topics as pharmaceutical packaging, the Italian packaging machinery industry, embedded robotics (as opposed to force-fitting automotive assembly robots into packaging lines), the evolution of machinery from so-called ‘Gen3’ to today’s modular mechatronic designs, and the movement away from PLC specs to a modern, functional specification built on open standards.

The latest report is titled Packaging Automation: Centerpiece for CPG Business Strategies. Issued just in time for PACK EXPO, it tackles no less than packaging operations’ untapped potential as a strategic competitive advantage. ARC looked at the wave of innovation unleashed at interpack this April, and how automated machinery can enable every initiative in packaging from sustainability to recession-fighting cost reduction initiatives.

Past reports identified key technologies that packagers must adopt in order to leverage their packaging assets. This brief goes to the next level, offering a recipe for the mutual success of
packaging systems providers – the new class of machine builders – and brand owners – the business strategists that CPG packaging operations really serve.

The report concludes with specific, actionable business process imperatives. One is the need to reconcile capital expenditure policies with missed opportunities for operational savings. Another is to define criteria and compensation for machinery builders who can provide turnkey responsibilities and better metrics.
